Bywater Community Garden
Bywater Mutual Homes is a community of over 300 homes in Annapolis, MD. This community is a subsidized housing co-operative, with many residents receiving rental subsidies. The Bywater Community Garden initiative has built residents’ collective knowledge about the importance of environmental stewardship, inspired greater self-efficacy in the area of sustenance and nutrition, and increased access to green space in the community. This project was necessary because these are greatly lacking in communities of color, even more so in low income communities. Resources about native plants, composting, rainwater harvesting, and growing vegetables, in addition to the enjoyment of a beautiful green space within the community, are the specific outcomes from this project.
